Intro to Breast Imaging
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and the second-leading cause of cancer death. Statistics show that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetimes and it affects roughly 2,500 men every year. That said, breast cancer screening has come a long way in the last few decades.
Since mammogram screenings began in the 1980s, mortality has decreased by 35 percent. Since there is no full-proof way to prevent breast cancer, early detection is important. Mammograms remain a huge part of this protocol. The American Cancer Society reports that 62 percent of breast cancers are now diagnosed at an early stage when it’s still localized and easier to treat successfully.
The push for early detection has resulted in a five-year relative survival rate of 99 percent. Early detection is necessary for timely, targeted treatment which is why the role of a mammogram technologist is such an important one.

The Breast Imaging & Ancillary Studies for Diagnosis continuing education course covers these advancements, including imaging, biopsy methods, and new methods of detection. The past decade has seen a dramatic improvement in detection and treatment and a mammogram technologist must be knowledgeable about new technology and eager to adopt new techniques. Having a better understanding of how far imaging and diagnostics have come also makes the mammographer a better source of care and support for patients.
This course consists of self-guided material, including photographs, mammography images, side-by-side comparisons, diagrams, and tables to reinforce the covered topics.
A wide variety of subjects are covered, starting with a history of breast cancer detection going back as far as the early 1900s through the FDA approved units in use today. Other topics covered include full-field digital mammography, the Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial, direct radiography versus computed radiography, digital breast tomosynthesis, and state-of-the-art mammography systems from GE, Hologic, Siemens, and FujiFilm Medical Systems.
Computer-aided detection for mammography, ultrasound, and tissue echogenicity are also covered, including specific subjects like how to position a patient for an ultrasound, ultrasound scanning patterns, and an overview of the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System ultrasound lexicon. Other topics in this course include breast MRIs, sentinel lymph node biopsy and lymphatic mapping, molecular breast imaging, PET scans, PET/CT, PEM/breast PET scan, thermography, contrast-enhanced spectral mammography, and ductography/galactography.
This course provides 2.5 CE learning credits and includes an online multiple-choice 20 question exam.

About the Instructor
Jeanette is the founder of RadComm. In her role as a breast imaging consultant and breast health educator, she has traveled the country instructing fellow mammographers in the fine art of mammography. She has been a registered radiologic technologist (ARRT) since 1975 and received certification in mammography in 1992.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from Mundelein College (of Loyola University), Chicago. She is a member of The Society of Breast Imaging and the Virginia Society of Radiologic Technologists. Jeanette was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 on an annual screening mammogram at the age of 42 and is proof that early detection saves lives.

Mammography continuing education credits and certificates are awarded after the successful completion of each course and exam. You will be given the option to print or save a copy to your computer for your records.
All mammography courses offered by RadComm have been approved by the Association for Medical Imaging Management (AHRA) for Category A Continuing Education Credits. AHRA is a Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism (RCEEM) and has been authorized by the ARRT to approve Category A credit.
Technologists may repeat any course for CE, if they complete it in a different biennium. Technologists using RadComm’s courses are responsible for tracking the courses they have completed on our site. RadComm assumes no responsibility for any issues arising from repeating a course(s) in the same biennium
No, these mammography courses are approved for technologist use and award Category A credits. They have not been submitted to physician governing bodies for approval.
Yes, these courses are approved by the state of Florida and have been assigned a Florida approval number, which appears on your Certificate of Completion. All other states recognize and accept continuing education Category A credits approved by an ARRT RCEEM (Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism).
The ARRT does not have any specific CE requirements for mammography technologists. They do require that all ARRT technologists earn 24 Category A credits per biennium (every two years) to satisfy CE requirements.
As part of the 24 credits required per biennium by the ARRT, MQSA (FDA) requires 15 credits of mammography-specific continuing education every 36 months (3 years) for mammographers. To simplify the confusion, RadComm recommends that you obtain a minimum of 5 Category A credits in mammography each year to fulfill the MQSA requirement.
