This unit of study includes comprehensive information on the anatomy and physiology of the breast. A summary of Breast Self-Examination is included so the mammographer can reinforce the practice of this important procedure to the patient. Additional information pertaining to an accurate and complete patient history is included. The mammographer will better comprehend the importance of the interview process and its correlation with breast cancer risks. In this way, we may better serve as a valuable liaison between the patient and the radiologist.

Anatomy & Physiology; Self Breast Exam; Patient History
When mammographers thoroughly understand Anatomy & Physiology of the Female Breast, they obtain higher quality imaging and provide the radiologist with pertinent information needed to assist in the interpretation of the mammogram. This knowledge is also useful in assisting or reinforcing the patient’s knowledge of performing a self breast exam.
In the Anatomy & Physiology, Self Breast Exam, and Patient History course, mammographers learn how to have a more active role with their patients in the fight against breast cancer, acting as an essential link between the patient and the radiologist. The course covers a wide range of information and includes multiple photos, charts, graphs, lists, and real mammography images to help reinforce the learning material.
Its goal is to educate the mammographer about breast anatomy, thus improving communication between the patient and radiologist and enabling the technician to be more supportive of the patient population.

The scope of this course is vast and covers many topics, starting with fetal breast development. Form and quadrants are discussed as well as identifying location using the clock method. Structures of the mature female breast are covered, including the anatomy of the ducts, vascular system, lymphatic drainage, breast tissue types, and both density and variations in density.
Congenital and acquired breast abnormalities are also covered, including common locations for and the appearance of supernumerary nipples. Physiology of the breast is explored, covering changes in breast tissue from embryonic development to adolescence and menopause.
It also takes a look at how the breast responds to pregnancy, lactation, and hormone replacement. How breast structures are visualized on mammography is reviewed as well as the differences observed during ovulation, pregnancy, lactation, and menopause. As some breast cancers are still missed on mammograms, knowing how to perform self-breast exams is important.
This course covers the three recommended patterns that women should use when performing a self breast exam as well as effective body positioning. This information helps mammographers support patients who are looking for guidance or affirmation. The benefits and limits of a self breast exam are explored and the American Cancer Society’s guidelines for how often women of both average and high risk should get a mammogram are reviewed.
The importance of proper documentation and getting an accurate patient history are covered as are some specific complaints a patient may have, like breast pain, skin changes, and any current lumps or masses. Each section of the course includes study questions to review and reinforce the material and a glossary of anatomical terms and conditions appears at the end.
This course is worth 2 CE credits and includes a 24 question multiple-choice online test.
Course is approved by the AHRA & recognized by the ARRT® for 2 Category A credits.
