Mammography of The Male Patient
Breast cancer in men is infrequent but not necessarily rare so any mammographer should be prepared to care for and support a male patient. Breast cancer accounts for less than one percent of all malignancies in men. Because there is little evidence to guide treatment, it is often recommended that men with breast cancer be treated using the same treatment guidelines used with post-menopausal women.
The rate of breast cancer in men has remained relatively stable over the past three decades, affecting about 2,250 individuals in 2018 with 480 deaths. While women have a one in eight chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, the risk for men is only one in 1,000. Rare, but not unheard of.
Mammographers must understand that breast cancer does affect men. This means that mammography professionals should be prepared to perform diagnostic imaging on a male.
The Mammography and the Male Patient course covers the difficulties of male mammography, including the conditions that may affect the male breast, recognizing each on exam, how to obtain high-quality imaging, and supporting the emotional needs of the patient.
The first topic in this mammography for men course is the anatomy of the male breast and the differences between it and the female breast. Various forms of benign gynecomastia are covered, including pseudo gynecomastia, physiologic gynecomastia, and pathological gynecomastia. The causes, treatment, and mammographic interpretation of these conditions are reviewed as is how to differentiate between gynecomastia and breast cancer.
Male pectoral implants are explored as well as the necessary surgical interventions when gynecomastia does not resolve naturally. Carcinoma of the male breast is covered in detail. Various types of breast cancer are looked at in-depth, including ductal carcinoma in situ, infiltrating ductal carcinoma, infiltrating lobular carcinoma, Paget’s disease of the breast, and inflammatory breast cancer.
Because breast cancer in men is so infrequent, etiology is examined thoroughly, including genetic mutations, geography, estrogen treatments, and testicular disorders. This course also provides a direct comparison between male and female breast cancer as it relates to mean tumor size, staging, and more. Cancer treatments covered include mastectomy, radiation, chemo, and multiple hormone therapies. Detailed step-by-step instructions as to how to position men for imagining are offered along with a thorough explanation of how to perform a self-breast exam.
This continuing education course is worth 1 CE and includes a 10 question multiple-choice online exam.
